Policy Intern Position

Background:

 

The Policy Intern will work under the direct supervision of and report to Chief of the Country Operations Division (COD) of the Regional Bureau for Arab States (RBAS) of the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). S/he will also work in close cooperation with the Programme Associate. COD is responsible of the oversight of UNDP programmes in the Region managed by its 17 countries including the Arabic-speaking countries of North Africa.  As part of its oversight and monitoring functions, COD conducts systematic analyses of annual reports submitted by the Country Offices outlining key results achieved in the reporting year within the framework of UNDP priorities. These include: Achieving MDGs & Reducing Human Poverty, Fostering Democratic Governance, Energy & Sustainable Environment, Crisis Prevention & Recovery and HIV/AIDS. Issues pertaining to gender equality, capacity development and South-South Cooperation are also analyzed.

 

Description of Responsibilities :

 

The intern will collect, from the Multi-Year Funding Framework database, data on country-specific results on the activities undertaken during the year 2006.  For 2 out of the five above-mentioned area, the intern will i) review the results reported by UNDP offices, ii) highlight the most salient results reported by these countries, iii) integrate the information into a regional overview of trends and key results and iv) highlight any major gaps and lessons to be drawn to improve future programmes.

Qualifications :

 

*       At least 10 credits of graduate coursework towards a Masters Degree (a program broadly related to international relations or international development);

*       Fluency in English with exceptional writing and analytical skills ; Ability to read French would be an asset, but is not a requirement;

*       Proficiency in current MS Office applications and Internet applications;

*       Some experience in Desktop Publishing is an advantage, but not a requirement.

*        

Logistical Arrangements :

 

*       The tentative period of the internship is from the 21st of May to the end of July, subject to adjustments mutually agreeable with the successful candidate;

*       The intern will be stationed at the Headquarters in New York. Travel is neither required nor expected;

*       The successful candidate will need to provide proof of health and life insurance coverage;

*       The UN does not provide stipends to interns;
